Riding the Green Wave: The Future of Seaweed Materials in Packaging
Seaweed-based packaging is emerging as a renewable alternative to plastics, which still account for 34% of packaging today. Cultivated without fertilisers, land, or freshwater, seaweed absorbs CO₂ up to 20 times more efficiently than trees. Current uses include edible pods, antimicrobial films, and rigid boxes for luxury goods. Market forecasts project growth from USD 669.4 million in 2024 to USD 1.08 billion by 2034. Challenges remain in cost, scalability, and moisture resistance under extended humidity exposure.
