How Thick Is Cardboard? Understanding Cardboard Thickness for Better Packaging Decisions
Cardboard thickness, or caliper, determines strength, weight, and durability, measured by micrometer per ISO 534 or TAPPI T411. Paperboard ranges from 250–900 μm, while corrugated board spans 2–15 mm depending on flute type and wall structure. Strength depends not only on thickness but also on density, fibre composition, and moisture conditions. Single wall corrugated (3–5 mm) suits 1–5 kg products, whereas double wall (5–9 mm) handles heavier loads. Correct caliper selection prevents product damage and optimises printing and stacking efficiency.
