Box dimensions are not just about length, width, and depth(height). Getting box measurements correct is a critical part of any product packaging design.
We wrote this article for our clients to get more information about box dimensions in the packaging industry.
Measuring box dimensions for a custom packaging project is kindly more complex than it may seem.
Why Box Dimensions a Crucial Part of Measurements?
Custom-fit packaging is always necessary for a business as unique as yours. Besides, the right size makes your product look pretty and helps you save on shipping and custom packaging materials.
The minimal room for movement in your box means minimal space for damage and a reduction in your overall costs. That could save your business thousands of millions of dollars in lost revenue. Moreover, it boosts your brand’s prestige.
Before the Box Dimensions Measurement
As we said at the beginning of this article, we’re not just talking about the size of the box. We care about your products:
Is it Fragile
Does it need any protective packing? Maybe inserts like foam, tray, or EVA could help make it safer.

Placement of Products in Packaging
Put the best side of your product to get the most exciting unboxing experiment. That might conflict with traditional space calculation.
When Custom a Box, Focus on Interior Dimensions
The basic rule of thumb in the packaging industry in measuring custom boxes is making all interior dimensions. No matter how thick the material is, the internal size assured that all products would fit inside our custom packaging.
Interior Dimensions vs Exterior Dimensions
Never use exterior dimensions as your project packaging size. It might not fit your product correctly. Worse, this could feasibly damage particular products that need the packaging to hold tight.
The best idea for checking if the size properly fits is to make a sample first. C MIC Packaging can make you samples within 3 days. Request for free samples >
Step by Step Box Measures Guide(with Examples)
Now let’s do this:
Step 1: Products Measurements First
Lay out all the products you want to pack on a flat surface. Simulate precisely how you want them placed inside your custom packaging box.
For off-sized items like false press on nails or CBD bottles, start by measuring the widest part of the product. It will make it easier to foresee how it looks inside the box.
example: magnet box with window for press-on nails
(Normally, we recommend a magnet lid packaging box with an open window and paper tray inserts for press-on nails, which are eco-friendly and elegant. You can contact us for more special design.)
Step 2: Measure the Space and Write it down
Measure the length from side to side;
Measure the width from back to front;
Measure the depth(height) from top to bottom.
Step 3: Add the Allowance Size for your Custom Packaging
We suggest adding an allowance of 0.25″(a quarter of an inch) to make it easy for items to be put in or carried out.
